Animal enzymes, particularly porcine derived enzymes, closely resemble human digestive enzymes. For that reason, many experts believe that animal enzymes are very effective. In general, animal enzymes are more sensitive to pH extremes. To compensate for this pH sensitivity, many of the animal enzyme formulas contain bicarbonates to protect the enzymes from stomach acid. There are many scientific systems used for measuring enzyme activity. Each different enzyme measurement system has an enzyme assay method with its own units of measurements. For example, one of the enzyme measurements from protease is HUT (Hemoglobin Unit Tyrosine). Lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose, the sugar in milk. The lactase in CompleteGest® is derived from Aspergillus oryzae. There is no milk in CompleteGest®.
