The slippery elm, also known as the red elm, is a tree native to North America; it grows across the United States, particularly in the Appalachian Mountains. It is so named because the bark becomes slippery in texture when chewed or mixed with water.

The bark is carefully collected from trees that are at least 15 years old; it is hand-harvested to ensure these precious trees are preserved for generations to come. Approximately 75 to 80 metric tons of slippery elm bark is produced annually!
