Happy new year! As we head into 2025, you might have a stack of new year’s resolutions on your plate. Regardless of your resolutions, creating a fresh space and mind can help set you up for success and remove some of that overwhelming feeling. Ahead, we’ll share some tips for decluttering both your space and mind so you can focus on what matters this new year.
For your space:
Keep or toss (and choose wisely!)
When going through knickknacks, clothes, or all those random items you store for use “someday,” it can be hard to decide what to keep or toss. Think about whether you’ll realistically use it within the next month or so. If the answer is no, it’s a toss. If you can’t live without it and can see yourself genuinely using it, it’s a keep. Have two bins, one for “Keep” and one for “Toss,” and donate what you can from the “Toss bin.” Once it’s out of sight, you won’t even remember why you had it! (Only donate items that are in good condition and can be reused by others. Anything that is broken, stained, or torn should be thrown.)
One in, one out
Keep this trick in the back of your mind when you’re shopping. “One in, one out” refers to the strategy of getting rid of one thing when you buy another brand-new thing. For example, if you buy a sweater that you just have to have, maybe look through the closet and donate one of your old sweaters—especially if they look similar. For all the readers out there, it can be tempting to hold on to your books, but maybe you don’t need all of them. Each time you get a new book, consider donating an old one to a local Little Free Library or giving it to a friend or neighbor.
Digitally declutter
This might not be related to the physical space in your home, but decluttering your phone and laptop space can sure make you feel lighter. So, what does digitally decluttering mean? Well, it can be anything from going through and deleting irrelevant or repetitive pictures from your camera roll to deleting apps that you’ve never used. Close out those tabs that have been open for months, delete those contacts that you haven’t spoken to in years, remove old reminders and notes, and if you’re feeling brave, go through your email. Feel the weight off your shoulders and appreciate the storage you just gained.
For your mind:
Practice mindfulness
Throughout the chaos of everyday life, it can be hard to find balance and be aware of what's going on in our bodies, minds, and environment around us. The purpose of a mindfulness exercise is to help you become more aware of how you react to certain situations and teach you to respond to them more thoughtfully, especially when dealing with situations where you’re overwhelmed or nervous.
Here are some easy tips to practice mindfulness:
- Take a few deep breaths when you feel overwhelmed.
- Put the phone down and try a digital detox.
- Repeat a daily affirmation that starts your day on a positive note.
- Be mindful during daily activities like brushing your teeth or washing your face. Use that time to find your calm before beginning your busy day.
Organize your thoughts in a journal
There can be a lot going on in our brains at one time. We all have a lot on our plates; sometimes Google Calendar works, but sometimes we need something a bit more concrete to organize our thoughts. Invest in a personal journal or planner to write down everything from your to-do lists to your dreams. Physically writing something down may help you remember it better versus typing it or adding it to a digital calendar. One study suggests that handwriting results in more complex brain connectivity patterns, especially in regions crucial for memory and learning.
