How to Have a Field Day at Home

Grab your sneakers and have a little friendly competition in the backyard.

Want to join in on the season’s competitions and feel like one of the pros? Host a field day of your very own in the comfort of your backyard. Get the kids involved and create some lasting memories as you compete to win the backyard games!

Here are some ideas for your own backyard field day:

Bean bag toss (Cornhole)

The bean bag toss, also known as cornhole, is a perfect activity to play in your backyard with friends and family.

What you’ll need:

  • 8 bean bags: 4 in one color, and 4 in another so you can differentiate teams
  • 2 cornhole boards
  • Either 2 participants for 1 vs.1, or 4 participants for 2 teams

The rules of cornhole are as follows:

  • Technically, the boards should be 27 feet apart, but for the kiddos you can move them closer – around 12 feet
  • Take turns tossing the bags
  • A bag that lands on the board is 1 point, and a bag that goes through the hole is 3 points
  • The first team that gets 21 points wins!

Long jump

This one’s pretty easy to set up. Simply gather all the participants in a horizontal line, side by side. On the count of three… jump! Mark where everyone landed with a stick and see who jumped the farthest. Award the winner their much-deserved prize.

Hula hoop contest

Hula hooping is loads of fun no matter your age. Test your skills by having a hula hoop contest. Gather the participants into a circle and get to hula hooping! Whoever can hula hoop the longest wins.

Egg and spoon race

As the name suggests, all you need are spoons and eggs for this one. This classic relay race is all about balance. Gather two teams and mark the starting line and turnaround point. A player will race (carefully) to the turnaround point and back without dropping their egg, and hand the spoon off to the next player in line. If any eggs are dropped, they must be picked up and put back on the spoon to continue. The first team to finish the relay wins! It’s up to you to decide if you want to get a bit messy and use raw eggs or stay safe with hardboiled ones.

100-yard dash

See who’s the fastest of the bunch with a simple 100-yard sprint. You can have as many participants as you’d like, as long as they can all fit in the yard. Mark the start and end of the race with something colorful and noticeable so everyone can keep their eyes on the finish line. Ready, set, go!

Take your field day to the next level

For extra fun, make your own trophies and awards! Get the kids together beforehand to craft them and have a ceremony at the end of the activities. Award your winners, but don’t forget to give out some awards to everyone for participating in the day of fun.

You can also provide some yummy snacks for the whole crew after a long day of fun. Here are some ideas sure to impress:

  • Serve a variety of chips and dips, like this delicious Dill Pickle Dip, a classic guacamole recipe, or this Crock-Pot Buffalo Chicken Dip.
  • For all our Midwest friends, no get-together is complete without some tortilla roll-ups. These are super easy to make, and the plate is sure to be gone by the end of the activities. Try out these Ham and Cheese Roll Ups.
  • Include a healthy yet delicious snack like Fruit Kabobs. These are both easy and fun to make, and the kids can even help pick out their personal fave fruits.
